Shiva Sutra Talks

by Swami Nirmalananda

This Sanskrit text is the foundational text of Kashmiri Shaivism, which was revealed by Lord Shiva to the sage Vasaguptacharya around 800 C.E.  Shree Vasagupta used this text as a basis for his teachings, which led to a flowering of the tradition over the next several hundred years.  This was the beginning of bringing the secret tantric teachings out of the caves of the Himalayas to the modern world.

Swami Nirmalananda began a series of sutra talks from this pivotal text, beginning in satsangs in October 2010, with those talks continuing today.  She was trained and empowered by Swami Muktananda, and has devoted her life to the study and practice of non-dualistic Kashmiri Shaivism.

These talks are collected together to make it easy for you to begin your study of the Shiva Sutras - see the links on the right.  She introduces the teachings of each sutra in turn.
Her explanations are geared both to the new yogi as well as the long-established practitioner, meaning she covers both introductory and advanced material.  Swamiji's emphasis is always on making the teachings practical and accessible, while showing the profound and esoteric dimensions available within.

For your own reading and study, Swamiji recommends this English translation:
Siva Sutras: The Yoga of Supreme Identity - by Jaideva Singh

She also recommends:
Nothing Exists That is Not Siva - by Swami Muktananda.  NOTE:  This book contains only selected sutras, with an illumined commentary that is deep and readily understandable

Other translations include the following, and are better for your second or third time through the text:
The Aphorisms of Siva - by Mark S. G. Dyczkowski
Kashmir Shaivism: The Secret Supreme - by Swami Lakshman Joo
