Commentary by Swami Nirmalananda:
To see the Divine Reality (Brahman) in the Vedic fire (agni) is to be uplifted by that experience.
The ancient fire ceremony is for the purpose of invoking Divine blessings. The offerings poured into the fire include grains, seeds and ghee (melted butter), transforming the fruits of the earth into energies that support the universe.
Similarly, the food you consume is a sacred ritual, one that supports your life, a sacred reality in this physical plane. Your digestive fire is agni. These mantras are a blessing on the eater, not the food — a blessing on the eater and the act of eating.
The sacred act of eating is Brahman;
The sacred food you eat is Brahman;
The one giving the food is Brahman;
The food poured into your sacred digestive fire is Brahman.
The knowing of Brahman shall certainly be reached
by the one who sees all as Brahman.
