World Meditation Day
December 21 2025
United Nations General Assembly has declared December 21 to be “World Meditation Day.” Six countries co-sponsored the resolution with 71 countries from all geographical regions and cultural backgrounds joining in as co-sponsors. The resolution was approved by consensus, meaning no opposition.
Its purpose is to raise awareness about the benefits of meditation. This International Day provides an important anchor in the UN calendar year to promote further understanding of the practice and benefits of meditation.
It is part of the United Nations’ larger goals of improving health and well-being worldwide. Many scientific studies have shown that meditation can reduce stress and improve mental and physical health. The resolution also highlights how meditation helps to improve focus, memory, and creates a sense of peace within individuals and communities.
In a time of armed conflict, climate crisis and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, it is important to support and uplift human consciousness, including through meditation.
India played a key role in supporting this initiative, as meditation is an important part of India’s cultural and spiritual traditions. It is consonant with India’s leadership in promoting yoga globally, with the International Day of Yoga already celebrated on June 21 since 2014. India’s Ambassador to the UN explained that the resolution supports the idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, “The whole world is one family.”
