Conciousness is Purring
By Gurudevi Nirmalananda
I first heard the resonant, layered sound of the tamboura live in 1976, at a program I attended to learn how to meditate.
That experience began a love affair that has been most beneficial. The sound touches my heart and deeper. It vibrates in my soul and pulls me into eternity.
The ancient sages designed the tamboura to recreate one of the inner sounds that is heard in deep levels of meditative absorption. It is such a beautiful instrument, made from a gourd and decorated with beautiful carvings and adornments. The tamboura, like all musical instruments in yoga, is revered as a physical form of the Goddess of Wisdom and Music, Shree Saraswati.
You don’t even have to know how to meditate. Just listen to the sustained tones and interwoven vibrations as well as the silence woven through the sound. It will draw you sweetly and progressively deeper inside. Hearing this sound on the outside helps to attune you to the experience of your own transcendent beingness on the inside.
Use this recording to create a sound environment for meditation or for your pranayama and asana practice (breathing and poses). It is NOT a good recording for driving or other externalized activities!
I found the tamboura of my dreams a few years ago, a male (large) gourd fitted with 6-strings that create and hold the prolonged, resonating, perfectly tuned drone. It is tuned at a rich low note, and played in a way to draw out the layered sound with silence woven through it.
It is my hope that you will get the feeling of it being played live on this recording. Let it vibrate through the room and through your being to draw you deeper and deeper inward.
