This great mantra is sung with a heartbeat rhythm to draw you inward, as if a magnet were pulling you inside.

The beautiful melody is a love song to the Self that quiets your mind, soothes your heart and opens your soul to take you deeper – into the Essence of Pure Being that is your own Being.

Shiva – Essence-Existence

A'ham – I am

Shiva is a name for God. However, the one named in this mantra is beyond your idea of God. Shiva is the Essence from which everything manifests; Shiva is that which existed before anything existed. Though Shiva is beyond qualities, we experience one of Shiva’s qualities as the knowing of His own Existence.

A'ham is the “I am,” the primordial throb of consciousness that vibrates in you. A'ham creates the beating of your heart, the rhythms of your breath and the light that shines through your eyes, as well as your mind and your sense of self.

Most of the time, you forget your true identity as Shiva, and get entangled in the events of life and in your superficial sense of self. You identify with your thoughts, your personal life history, or your goals and dreams for the future. You forget that essence which is your true identity. But the truth is that Shiva has become you and is living as you.

This mantra reminds you, “I am Shiva, I am Shiva, I am Shiva…” It comes to us through the lineage of Yoga Masters. Sri Shankaracharya included it as the chorus to his “Hymn to the Self” over 1,000 years ago. Bhagawan Nityananda gave it in more recent times. Through their blessings, I offer it to you so that you might experience and know the Truth within.
